Codex Cloud: Codex working on a task in its own VM in OpenAI's cloud, in an environment set up with the task's GitHub repositories. Tasks start when someone asks, in ChatGPT on the web, phone or desktop, from @ChatGPT in Slack, or as a review asked for with @codex review on a GitHub pull request. It has no schedule of its own. This describes a kind of platform, not anyone's workspace. Checked against OpenAI's documentation on 22 October 2026. https://learn.chatgpt.com/docs/third-party/github https://learn.chatgpt.com/docs/third-party/slack

Off for up to
no time: it is always on

Each task runs in the cloud and keeps working while the computer is asleep. https://learn.chatgpt.com/docs/cloud

Runs steps as
an AI agent

Each task is a Codex session that carries out the request. https://learn.chatgpt.com/docs/cloud

AI from
openai

Codex's own agent. https://learn.chatgpt.com/docs/cloud

Can call
none

A task's VM has no internet access until the environment turns on "Allow Codex to access internet", and the Package managers preset reaches no model API. So the workflow's own code cannot call a model company unless you allow its domain: list that company here then. https://learn.chatgpt.com/docs/environments/cloud-environments#connect-to-services

Holds
notes

The environment holds the GitHub repositories chosen for it, and a task keeps its changes by committing them or opening a pull request. So it holds notes only when the notes are kept in one of those repositories. https://learn.chatgpt.com/docs/cloud https://learn.chatgpt.com/docs/environments/cloud-environments
